At New York Sinus & Thyroid Surgery Center, we offer comprehensive care for a wide range of sinus-related disorders. Dr. Edward Shin is a sinus specialist in NYC and will meet with you to evaluate your condition and recommend the best treatment options. Sinus treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, reducing inflammation, and addressing any underlying causes of the condition. An accomplished sinus specialist in NYC, Dr. Shin can also help treat nasal polyps and other sinus obstructions using revolutionary technology and advanced sinus surgery techniques.

How Do I Know If I Have A Sinus Disorder?

Sinus disorders are very difficult to tell apart without the professional guidance of a sinus specialist, as various symptoms overlap. There are many possible causes for your sinus condition, including blockages in the sinus pathway or obstructions in the nasal cavity that prevent the sinuses from draining. Certain disorders, like recurring sinus infections and common colds, can have very similar symptoms.

THINGS TO CONSIDER
Are your symptoms chronic or have they begun to dissipate?
Do your symptoms reoccur after a few weeks?
Are you continually affected by symptoms?

Many colds or infections resolve themselves within weeks, but chronic or severe sinus symptoms may be indications of an underlying condition.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is the most common sinus condition in America, with over 30 million people each year seeking treatment to relieve symptoms. Sinusitis occurs when the lining of your sinuses becomes inflamed. Common causes include bacterial or viral infections, allergies, and nasal polyps. Our sinus specialist in NYC can properly diagnose the underlying causes of sinusitis and provide treatment to improve symptoms.

Sinusitis

SINUSITIS
CAUSED BY INFLAMMATION OF THE SINUS LINING
BLOCKAGE CAUSES SINUSES TO FILL WITH MUCUS
WIDE RANGE OF SYMPTOMS, INCLUDING RUNNY NOSE & HEADACHES
CAN BE CHRONIC & REOCCURRING

Sinus Infections

Many people suffer from acute or chronic sinus infections caused by sinus obstructions. If the sinuses cannot properly drain, fluid can fill the sinus cavity and increase the chance of an infection. Sinus infections can be caused by either viruses or bacteria. For some patients, underlying sinus conditions can lead to reoccurring sinus infections and chronic nasal inflammation, headaches, nasal discharge, and more.

Sinus Infections

SINUS INFECTIONS
CAUSED BY VIRUSES OR BACTERIA
OBSTRUCTIONS LEAD TO CLOGGED SINUS PATHWAYS
HEADACHES & THICK NASAL DISCHARGE ARE COMMON
INFECTIONS CAN REOCCUR UNTIL UNDERLYING CAUSES ARE ADDRESSED

Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches are among the most unpleasant symptoms of sinus infections. Pressure and tenderness around the forehead, eyes, nose, and cheeks are common indicators of a sinus headache. Some patients confuse sinus headaches with other conditions, including migraines and tension headaches. Proper diagnosis by our sinus specialist can determine the underlying causes of your sinus headache. Dr. Shin can discuss available treatment options with you.

Sinus Headaches

SINUS HEADACHES
CAUSED BY SINUS OBSTRUCTIONS
COMMONLY EXPERIENCED DURING ALLERGIES OR SINUS INFECTIONS
OFTEN CONFUSED WITH MIGRAINES & TENSION HEADACHES
PHYSICAL EXAM & CT SCAN CAN DETECT UNDERLYING CAUSES

Deviated Septum

Septal deviations can be genetic or caused by accidents and injuries. The septum is a piece of bone and cartilage that runs vertically down the middle of the nose. The septum symmetrically separates the nostrils. A deviation or deflection of the septum can lead to nasal obstruction and restrict airflow through one or both nostrils. Septal deviation surgery can repair a deviated septum by realigning the septum to improve breathing function.

Deviated Septum

DEVIATED SEPTUM
CAUSED BY A SEPTAL DEVIATION
CAN IMPAIR BREATHING & AIRFLOW THROUGH THE NOSE
THE DEVIATION CAN BE REMOVED OR SHIFTED BACK INTO PLACE
CAN BE TREATED WITH SEPTOPLASTY SURGERY

Nasal Obstruction

Nasal obstruction can be caused by colds, infections, allergies, abnormal growths, or nasal deformities. Physical obstructions of the nasal pathways and sinuses can be surgically removed to improve airflow. Nasal polyps and tumors are examples of growths that can cause nasal obstruction. Structural issues like a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates can also be surgically corrected to restore airflow. Our sinus specialist can diagnose the root cause(s) of your nasal obstruction and determine an ideal treatment plan.

Nasal Obstruction

NASAL OBSTRUCTION
USUALLY CAUSED BY SWELLING, NASAL DEFORMITIES, OR GROWTHS
CAN RESTRICT THE FLOW OF AIR THROUGH ONE OR BOTH NOSTRILS
EXACERBATED BY COLDS OR SINUS INFECTIONS
SYMPTOMS CAN BE CHRONIC & REOCCURRING

Nasal & Sinus Tumors

Nasal and sinus tumors refer to growths along the nasal passages or sinus pathways. These growths can be either cancerous or non-cancerous. Patients with nasal or sinus tumors may experience difficulty breathing through the nose, as well as chronic nosebleeds, loss of smell, facial discomfort, and unusual discharge from the nose. A biopsy can be performed to diagnose these tumors and determine the proper treatment options.

Nasal & Sinus Tumors

NASAL & SINUS TUMORS
GROWTHS MAY BE CANCEROUS OR BENIGN
BIOPSY IS USUALLY REQUIRED
IF CANCEROUS, TREATMENT OPTIONS INCLUDE RADIATION OR CHEMOTHERAPY
IF BENIGN, GROWTHS CAN BE REMOVED SURGICALLY

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps refer to soft, non-cancerous growths found in the nose. Polyps tend to hang down and block a portion of the nasal cavity, which in turn blocks airflow through the nose. Nasal polyps can also be a contributor to chronic sinusitis. Nasal polyp surgery can remove these growths to improve breathing and reduce symptoms. Our sinus specialist can use endoscopic techniques to surgically remove nasal polyps for long-lasting results.

Nasal Polyps

NASAL POLYPS
BENIGN GROWTHS FOUND IN THE NASAL PASSAGES
CAN OBSTRUCT AIRFLOW & INTERFERE WITH SINUS DRAINAGE
CAN BE SURGICALLY REMOVED TO CLEAR NASAL PATHWAYS
MAY REOCCUR IF NOT PROPERLY TREATED & MONITORED

Paranasal Sinus Mucocele

Sinus mucoceles can obstruct the sinus’ outflow tracts that help maintain proper drainage. Though these mucoceles are non-cancerous, they tend to expand over time. As they grow larger, they can put pressure on surrounding structures. If left untreated, paranasal sinus mucoceles can evolve into infected mucoceles (known as mucopyoceles). Our sinus specialist can remove sinus mucoceles to help open space for the sinuses to drain efficiently.

Paranasal Sinus Mucocele

PARANASAL SINUS MUCOCELE
BENIGN CYSTIC MASSES FILLED WITH MUCUS
CAN COMPRESS SINUS STRUCTURES AS MUCOCELE EXPANDS OVER TIME
MAY EVOLVE INTO A MUCOPYOCELE (INFECTED MUCOCELE) IF LEFT UNTREATED
CAN BE SURGICALLY REMOVED TO PREVENT SINUS BLOCKAGES

Nosebleeds

Though most nosebleeds are harmless, chronic nosebleeds may be an indicator of an underlying sinus condition. Allergies, infections, nasal dryness, and nasal polyps can all contribute to nosebleeds. Injuries and accidents are also common causes of nosebleeds. There are many in-office procedures available to treat nosebleeds. If you are experiencing chronic nosebleeds, an appointment with a sinus specialist can help determine your best course of action.

Nosebleeds

NOSEBLEEDS
MAY BE INDICATIVE OF AN UNDERLYING SINUS CONDITION
CAN BE CAUSED BY NASAL IRRITATION, BROKEN BLOOD VESSELS, OR TRAUMA TO THE NOSE
MAY BE RELATED TO ALLERGIES, INFECTIONS, OR NASAL POLYPS
CAN BE ACUTE OR CHRONIC

Allergies & Allergy Treatments

Allergies can greatly affect your quality of life. Patients frequently experience headaches, runny nose, sore throats, and post-nasal drip as a result of being exposed to irritants. Many patients suffer from allergies but do not know the root causes. Pollen, dust, mold, and pet hair are just some common causes of allergy symptoms. Our sinus specialist can refer you to an allergist to test for specific allergies. Allergy treatments are available to lessen and control symptoms.

Allergies & Allergy Treatments

ALLERGIES
CAN CAUSE SINUSITIS SYMPTOMS
GENERALLY INVOLVES NASAL INFLAMMATION & DISCOMFORT AROUND THE FOREHEAD & MIDFACE
TREATMENT INCLUDES IDENTIFYING, AVOIDING, & MANAGING SYMPTOMS
SINUS SURGERY MAY HELP ALLEVIATE SYMPTOMS

Are Over-The-Counter Treatments & Home Remedies Effective For Sinus Disorders?

Certain over-the-counter medicines can help alleviate and reduce the severity of sinus symptoms. In addition, home remedies may help acute cases of infections, headaches, or allergies. However, many patients do not find adequate relief with over-the-counter treatments alone. In some situations, patients may have an undiagnosed sinus disorder that does not respond at all to non-prescription medicines. Seeing a sinus specialist can determine the causes of your symptoms so you can understand which treatments are ideal for your condition.
