Balloon Sinuplasty NYC

Sinusitis Surgery

Undergoing balloon sinuplasty in NYC can relieve the effects of chronic or severe sinusitis. Technological advancements have led to innovative sinus treatments that can address symptoms of sinusitis with less downtime and recovery than traditional sinus surgery. Balloon sinuplasty is a revolutionary technique that can clear the sinus pathways and flush out congestion without the need for surgery or incisions. Balloon sinuplasty can address blockages and obstructions of the sinuses that lead to inflammation. These blockages, along with sinus inflammation, are known as sinusitis. This can cause unpleasant symptoms ranging from congestion to headaches. Unlike cold or flu symptoms, which eventually dissipate after a few weeks, chronic sinusitis is reoccurring. Sinusitis patients may have symptoms lasting months or even years. Balloon sinuplasty is designed to treat chronic sinusitis by expanding the sinus openings and removing backed up mucus to provide relief. Balloon sinuplasty is performed by our ENT surgeon. Dr. Edward Shin offers balloon sinuplasty in NYC as a minimally invasive solution to sinusitis. Learn more about balloon sinuplasty below.

What Can Balloon Sinuplasty Treat?

Balloon sinuplasty is FDA-approved to treat chronic or severe sinusitis by flushing out buildups in the sinuses and opening the sinus passageways to prevent further blockages. When the sinuses are functioning normally, they produce mucus to lubricate the nose. This mucus acts as a filtration system which then drains out down the back of the throat. If there is a blockage, however, mucus may back up and fill the sinus cavities, leading to infections which cause the unpleasant symptoms of sinusitis. Balloon sinuplasty can open and clear the sinus cavities and passageways to help the sinuses drain properly.

What Are The Symptoms Of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis can have multiple symptoms, including nasal congestion, nasal discharge, headaches, facial sensitivity and pressure, cough, sore throat, post-nasal drip, and a reduced sense of smell. It may be difficult to distinguish between symptoms of sinusitis and other sinus conditions. Dr. Edward Shin is a board-certified ENT in NYC and can help diagnose sinusitis during an evaluation at our office.

How Is Balloon Sinuplasty Performed?

Balloon sinuplasty does not require general anesthesia. Our sinus surgeon, Dr. Shin, will administer a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area before your balloon sinuplasty procedure. A flexible balloon catheter is then inserted into the sinus passage to dilate the sinus opening. The balloon is inflated and slowly expands the sinus opening without affecting the sinus lining. By gently forcing the sinus passage open, the balloon catheter helps restructure the sinus wall. Once there is ample room, a saline solution is sprayed into the inflamed sinus to clear out any mucus and buildup. The balloon catheter is then removed from the sinus canal. The sinus passageway remains widened even after the catheter is removed to help prevent further blockages.

How Is Balloon Sinuplasty Different From Other Types Of Sinus Surgery?

Many other sinus treatments require surgical removal of structures. For example, septoplasty involves removing or reshaping cartilage and bone to repair a deviated septum, while turbinate reduction addresses the soft tissue and underlying bone of the turbinates. Endoscopic sinus surgery techniques focus on treating blockages by removing bone or tissue.

Unlike the above types of sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty is minimally invasive and does not utilize surgical excision. There is no cutting or out-fracturing necessary. Instead, balloon sinuplasty uses balloon dilation devices to slowly expand and restructure the sinus pathway. This technique is minimally invasive and can be completed in less time than traditional sinus surgery. Balloon sinuplasty patients can expect less downtime and recovery; they typically return to work and daily activities faster, as well.

Who Are Ideal Candidates For Balloon Sinuplasty In NYC?

Over 30 million Americans are affected by sinusitis each year; for some of these patients, over-the-counter remedies are not enough to alleviate symptoms. Balloon sinuplasty may be an ideal treatment for those with chronic or severe sinusitis that has not responded to non-invasive methods like medications and nasal sprays.

Many patients prefer balloon sinuplasty for the shorter procedure time and less recovery. Dr. Shin may suggest balloon sinuplasty as an initial sinus treatment for patients suffering from severe sinusitis. If symptoms do not respond, then a different form of sinus surgery may be considered. Dr. Shin can discuss whether balloon sinuplasty is right for you during your consultation.

What Can I Expect Following Balloon Sinuplasty?

Most balloon sinuplasty patients can return to their regular activities within 2-3 days. Since there are no incisions made during your procedure, no external bruising or swelling should be present. There is no nasal drip pad required. Pain medication may be prescribed to reduce any discomfort. You may experience congestion and some light bleeding in your nasal discharge, as well as tenderness around the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Some patients feel tired or groggy for a few hours after treatment. These side effects are normal and should subside within days.

Patients should try to refrain from blowing their nose for a few days (unless it is necessary to reduce pressure). Vigorous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a few days to allow for optimal healing. Balloon sinuplasty patients require a follow-up appointment to monitor results. Dr. Shin is happy to answer any of your questions regarding the procedure, as well as after-care or instructions.
